Caerphilly Council Backs Waspi Women Pensions Campaign

Caerphilly Council Backs Waspi Women Pensions Campaign

Councillors in Caerphilly have unanimously backed the campaign for compensation by the so-called Waspi women who were affected by state pension age changes,

A notice of motion was submitted by Plaid Cymru councillor Teresa Parry, seconded by Plaid Cymru group leader Charlotte Bishop and supported by Plaid Cymru,  Labour and Indpendent councillors.

The motion said that many women born in the 1950s and 1960s were significantly affected by the accelerated increase in the state pension age from 60 to 66. And many did not receive adequate or timely notice, leaving them without the opportunity to financially prepare for up to six additional years before receiving their state pension.

Councillor Teresa Parry, who represents Hengoed ward, said the insufficient information had caused serious financial stress for many.

“We believe that affected women deserve fair, prompt and just compensation for the hardship caused by failures in communication.

“While our council cannot provide financial support directly it can and should stand up for residents who have been unfairly disadvantaged.

“We believe the collective action from local authorities will strengthen the call for urgent, national resolution.”

The council agreed to write to the Westminster Labour Government.
