Plaid Cymru Senedd Members have thanked firefighters and other emergency workers for their work tackling wildfires.
The message from Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Rhymni Senedd Members Lindsay Whittle, Delyth Jewell and Niamh Salkeld comes in the wake of an announcement by South Wales Fire & Rescue Service (SWFRS) that the major wildfires incident had been stood down.
At the height of activity last month, SWFRS was responding to 14 concurrent wildfires across the region.
Lindsay Whittle MS said: “The work of the firefighters and other emergency workers to protect our communities has been quite phenomenal.
“They deserve all the praise possible because they worked in such unimaginable conditions to save life, property and agricultural land. It was beyond the call of duty and they did themselves proud.
“I do have concerns for the farmers affected going forward because they have been using up their winter supplies during the heatwaves.”
Delyth Jewell MS said: “This summer of smoke brought the reality of the climate crisis into our homes. I want to pay tribute to the brave firefighters for tackling the blazes, and to praise as well the generosity of so many local businesses and people in donating food to support them. It is maddening beyond belief to think that some fires in our valleys might have been started deliberately.
"An emergency summit will be held as soon as possible, now that the major incident has been stood down, to look at what urgent lessons we need to learn for the future."
Niamh Salkeld MS said "I want to thank our fire and rescue services, the military, local communities, farmers and so many others who have shown extraordinary courage and determination in incredibly difficult and challenging conditions.
"The scale and seriousness of these wildfires is also a stark reminder of the risks Wales is facing from a changing climate. I'm glad to see that the Welsh Government has announced a multi-agency summit for the wildfires, so we can learn from what has happened, and make sure our communities have the support and resources they need for the future."
