Plaid Cymru Senedd Member Highlights Caerphilly School’s Attendance Record

Plaid Cymru Senedd Member Lindsay Whittle  has praised a Caerphilly school for its work on achieving high pupil attendance.

The Caerphilly Senedd Member, who has volunteered at two local schools on a literacy project for eight years,  praised the 98.2% attendance at Ysgol Gymraeg, Caerffili in  September – well above the national average – at a Senedd plenary session today (Tuesday).

“It is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the dedication of pupils, families and staff working together. What we see there should inspire all schools across Caerphilly and Wales. Strong relationships with families and a welcoming environment really  does actually  make a difference.

“So at Ysgol Gymraeg, Caerffili shows it is possible when investment is in the right place.”

Lindsay Whittle asked how much of the Family Engagement Officer funding of £7m  would go to the Caerphilly county borough.

Cabinet Secretary for Education Lynne Neagle thanked Lindsay Whittle for the work he was doing in schools on literacy. “I really welcome that and very happy to add my congratulations to Ysgol Gymraeg, Caerffili.”

She said the funding would go to local authorities on a formula basis.
