Plaid Senedd Member Urges Action To Offer Women More Job Opportunities

Plaid Cymru Senedd Member Lindsay Whittle has pressed the First Minister to ensure opportunities are created for women in new growth industries such as clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

The Blaenau Gwent, Caerffili, Rhymni MS, who tabled a question to Rhun ap Iorwerth in the Senedd, said: “I welcome the Welsh Government’s focus on growth sectors and its commitment to fairness in the workplace.

“To ensure in the valleys that I represent that women directly benefit from  these opportunities, could you expand how you will work alongside local authorities and industry partners to explore targeted apprenticeship pathways for women in our former coalfield valleys?”

How will the Welsh Government ensure that women can access opportunities in major growth sectors, including advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and information technology?

First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said that it was the mission of the government to unlock the talents of the workforce and ensuring economic opportunities everywhere and open to everyone.

"We aim to work with employers, education training providers and others to ensure women can progress in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy and digital technology where many women are already having a huge impact.”

“We want more women to access apprenticeships, develop higher level skills and progress into well paid careers that many women thought were closed to them not that long ago. They are not to any women,” added the First Minister.
